The Brunel Lounge is the latest addition to the Slieve Donard Resort & Spa.Designed to be used as a meeting room and reception space on its own, or in conjunction with the Chandelier Lounge with which it interconnects, this new lounge at the front of the hotel faces directly towards Slieve Donard, after which the Hotel is named. The Brunel Lounge looks out over Dundrum Bay, which gives the clue as to its name. For it was in Dundrum Bay in 1846 that the world’s first ship constructed from iron, the famous SS Great Britain, became stranded over that winter. It was thought that she had run aground after mistaking the St John’s Point lighthouse for the Isle of Man Lighthouse, further to the east. The ship’s designer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the greatest engineer of his generation came over in person to supervise the refloating of his pride and joy. The SS Great Britain can still be visited today, and resides in port, in Bristol.
