In the ever-evolving world of hospitality, it’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day demands. But every once in a while, an initiative comes along that reignites the spark of why we do what we do. One such initiative is the Hastings Hotels Maître d’s Book Club—a gathering that’s as much about inspiration as it is about learning. Launched by Chairman, Dr. Howard Hastings OBE, this innovative program is reshaping the way Hastings nurtures talent and foster a sense of community among our Maître d’s.

Head of People and Culture, Rob Rees, reflects on a recent highlight from the the most recent get together —an extraordinary session with award-winning Chef Patron Richard Corrigan. As he shared his wealth of experience and deep passion for hospitality, Chef Corrigan reminded the group of the powerful connection between the kitchen and front-of-house, and how the role of a Maître d’ is at the very heart of creating memorable guest experiences.

'It’s not often that you have one of those "pinch me, this is my job" moments. But this last Monday was exactly that for me. Sitting in the Europa Hotel, surrounded by some of the most passionate individuals in our industry, I was reminded of why we do what we do—and how much potential there is when we take the time to learn from each other.

Over the past six months, our Chairman, Dr. Howard Hastings OBE, launched a concept that some might call part of a long-term strategy to engage the next generation of hospitality professionals. But the reality is, the Hastings Hotels Maître d Book Club isn’t about strategy—it’s about sparking passion. It’s about gathering our Maître d’s together, from across our hotel collection to learn, share, and grow in a way that’s both meaningful and informal, outside the constraints of a traditional training environment. This book club is a new approach, and from what we’ve seen so far, it’s already proving to be one of the most exciting initiatives for nurturing the talent we have within our ranks.

This Monday’s session was special, as we welcomed Chef Richard Corrigan—someone who not only understands the heart of hospitality but lives it every day. Richard, had cooked for Presidents, Royalty, won countless awards and yet here he was, accepting our invitation to our wonderful city and our world-famous hotel. Taking the time to share his experiences, stories and his keen eye for detail.
His presence in the room was electrifying, and the wisdom he shared with us was something that will stay with our team for a long time. Chef Corrigan spoke about the "spark" that must exist between the kitchen and front-of-house, a synergy that brings the guest experience to life. It's more than just coordination—it’s about communication, respect, and a shared commitment to creating something extraordinary for every guest who walks through our doors.

What struck me most about Chef Corrigan’s insights was his understanding of the Maître d’s role as the ultimate bridge-builder. It’s a job that requires intelligence, leadership, and the ability to balance the needs of both the team and the guest. The Maître d’s, he reminded us, is the key to unlocking a seamless flow between what happens in the kitchen and the service experience at the table. It’s that special connection that transforms a meal into a memory, and one that he cares deeply about in his restaurants that are part of the Corrigan Collection.

This is the kind of learning that our book club aims to inspire. It’s not just about reading books or discussing hospitality theory—it’s about fostering real conversations and sharing experiences that can change the way we work, think, and lead. In every session, we’ve seen our Maître d’s grow, not just as professionals but as individuals. We’re creating a community where they can draw from each other’s strengths, share their challenges, and gain new perspectives.

What makes this initiative even more powerful is its simplicity. There’s no pressure, no hierarchy—just people who are passionate about what they do, learning from each other. As we look ahead, I’m excited to see how this book club will continue to evolve, and how the lessons we learn in these sessions will shape the future of Hastings Hotels.

Because in the end, as Chef Corrigan so eloquently put it, a great Maître d doesn’t just serve the guest—they shape the entire experience. And that’s what we’re all here to do.'
